Maximising Space with Floating Shelves

A Guide to Integrated Stone Floating Shelves

Floating shelves are more than just an eye-catching design detail; they are a functional addition to the modern kitchen, transforming unused wall space into elegant storage areas. This feature is becoming increasingly popular in contemporary interior design.

In most installations, floating shelves sit atop matching wall cladding or backsplashes to complement the primary work surfaces. Whether you select Quartz, marble, granite, or porcelain, all the materials we craft at Surrey Marble and Granite are perfectly suited to these bespoke installations.

To achieve a seamless “floating” look, we employ three primary installation techniques depending on the material thickness and the wall type.

The Mitred Box Method

This is one of the most common techniques, often used to match the profile of a thickened worktop, usually between 40 and 60mm.

  • The Process: We create a pocket or cavity within the shelf by mitre-bonding a piece of material to the front and underside.

  • The Result: This cavity houses the shelf bracket, the “tail” of which is concealed behind the backsplash or recessed into the plaster.

  • The Finish: Our advanced bonding system ensures glue lines are almost invisible, providing a beautiful, monolithic appearance.

The Masonry Recess Method

This method is ideal for those who prefer a slimmer shelf profile of 20mm or 30mm.

  • The Process: Your contractors cut a precise cavity directly into the wall. The shelf is then inserted and secured using an industrial-grade, high-strength adhesive.

  • Requirements: This technique is specifically suited for masonry walls to ensure structural integrity.

The Stud-Bonding Method

Specifically designed for 30mm thick materials, this method relies on a collaborative approach.

  • The Process: Your contractor installs metal studs (spaced at a minimum of 600mm) protruding no more than 100mm from the wall.

  • The Installation: Our stone arrives with pre-drilled location holes in the rear. The material is then resin-bonded directly onto the studs for a permanent, secure fit.
