Relaxing and Family Friendly – The Perfect Bathroom

Cedric Mattock

Owner & Managing Director

Creating a bathroom that moves seamlessly from toddler bedtimes to a relaxing soak to a romantic evening is easier than it sounds. Believe it or not, these three very different uses have a great deal in common when it comes down to the practical details.

Tough yet beautiful materials

Practical doesn’t have to be ugly. Granite tiles are tough enough to withstand almost anything you can throw at them, as well as being waterproof and hygienic. The fact that this natural stone comes in sophisticated hues from dark grey to delicate white makes it perfect for the multi-purpose family bathroom.

Add a spacious bath or shower

Whether you’re bathing the kids or enjoying a glass of wine and your favourite bubble bath, having more space in the tub will make it easier. If your bathroom is small or awkwardly shaped, look for baths that are unconventional shapes. Modern manufacturers have gone beyond the traditional tub, creating corner baths and ones with bulges at one end or the middle. An a fully-lined tray-less shower is another way to make the most of the space. Choose beautiful granite tiles and a rainfall shower for spa feel.

Jazz up a wet room with a feature wall

Cleaning up isn’t relaxing, nor is worrying about water seeping through to other rooms. To avoid any problems from splashes and mess, a wetroom is the best choice. Add an extra level of sophistication by using high-quality materials to create a feature wall. Granite tile is a great choice, as it comes in a range of natural shades and can be used on both walls and floors. Even if you don’t want to completely tile the room, an extended splashback makes a great feature and a practical addition to any bathroom.

Keep your storage discrete

Clear surfaces make it easy to pull out the accessories that transform a room from playground to spa. Incorporate plenty of storage into your bathroom and it will be easy to tuck away the toys and bring out the tea lights. Floating shelves at a high level are a great way to make a feature out of an empty wall and simultaneously store decorative luxury bath salts, spa candles and other treats out of the reach of little hands.

Choose fixtures for adults and accessories for kids

Children grow up so quickly that there’s little point in choosing bathroom fixtures just to suit them. While your three-year-old might love dinosaurs enough to plaster the house with them, a few months or years later they’ll have a new favourite. For a long-lasting bathroom you all love, choose permanent fixtures and fittings that suit your sophisticated adult taste and add toys, towels and other temporary items for the kids. From soap colouring crayons you can use to draw on granite tiles to temporary wall decals, there are lots of ways to make bath time fun that can be whisked out of sight when the kids go to bed.
