Mid-Summer Stone Care: How to Protect Your Worktops from Heat, Citrus, and Sun

Summer in the UK is finally in full swing. With warmer days and longer evenings, our homes naturally open up. Whether you are hosting a lively weekend barbecue, mixing fresh cocktails for friends, or navigating the chaotic hustle of the school summer holidays, your kitchen worktops inevitably become the focal point of all the action.

However, mid-summer entertaining introduces a unique set of seasonal stressors to premium natural stone and engineered surfaces. From acidic cocktail ingredients to intense UV exposure through large bifold doors, your investment faces a few hidden summer hazards.

To ensure your surfaces stay as pristine as the day they were installed, here is our essential guide to mid-summer stone care.

1. The Cocktail Hour Danger: Citrus and Etching

Summer entertaining means plenty of fresh, vibrant ingredients. Sliced lemons for a gin and tonic, squeezed limes for a classic margarita, or a bowl of fresh summer berries for dessert are all staples of a great garden party.

However, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegars are highly acidic. When these acids come into contact with calcium-carbonate-based stones (most notably marble and limestone), a chemical reaction occurs known as etching.

What is etching? It is not a stain. Instead, the acid physically eats away at the surface layer of the stone, leaving behind a dull, hazy, or whitish mark that looks like a water ring.

How to protect your stone:

  • Always use a barrier: Never cut lemons, limes, or summer fruits directly on the stone. Use a dedicated wooden or plastic chopping board.
  • Create a drinks station: If you are setting up a self-serve bar area for guests, place a protective tray or runner down to catch rogue splashes of prosecco, citrus juice, or tonic water.
  • Wipe immediately: If a spill does occur, don’t leave it until the end of the evening. Blot it immediately with a soft microfiber cloth and warm water.

2. Sun-Drenched Kitchens: UV Rays and Quartz

Many modern British extensions feature spectacular expanses of glass, sky lanterns, floor-to-ceiling windows, and bifold doors that flood the kitchen with mid-summer sunlight. While beautiful, this intense UV exposure requires careful consideration if you have engineered quartz worktops.

Because quartz is a manufactured product made of crushed natural stone bound together with polymer resins, it can be sensitive to direct, prolonged sunlight. Over time, strong UV rays can cause the resin to discolour, or fade, primarily with darker shades.

How to protect your stone:

  • Utilise blinds or awnings: During the peak hours of midday sun (typically between 11 am and 3 pm), consider drawing blinds or extending outdoor awnings to shield internal quartz surfaces from direct glare.
  • Choose the right stone for outdoor spaces: If you are planning an outdoor kitchen or BBQ island that will sit in direct sunlight, opt for granite or sintered stone (such as Dekton). These are entirely UV-proof and will never fade or warp under the summer sun.

3. Thermal Shock: BBQ to Benchtop

Mid-summer is peak barbecue season. When you’re rushing to bring sizzling skewers, grilled steaks, or hot foil parcels from the outdoor grill into the indoor kitchen, it is incredibly tempting to place the hot dish straight onto the nearest flat surface.

While stones like granite and quartzite are highly heat-resistant, placing an intensely hot pan directly onto a cool stone surface can cause thermal shock. In rare cases, this rapid temperature differential can lead to micro-cracking or damage to the stone’s protective sealant. For engineered quartz, direct heat can permanently scorch the resin.

How to protect your stone:

  • Keep trivets handy: Keep a few stylish wooden, silicone, or cast-iron trivets scattered across the worktops during gatherings so they are always within arm’s reach when a hot dish arrives.
  • Let it rest: Allow meats and grilled dishes to rest on a dedicated wooden carving board rather than a metal tray placed directly on the stone.

Summer Cleaning: Stick to the Basics

With kids home from school and guests coming and going, summer worktops need frequent wiping down to clear away sticky ice cream drips, sunscreen rings, and crumbs.

When cleaning up after a busy day, avoid aggressive, off-the-shelf supermarket cleaners. Many contain abrasive chemicals, bleach, or acidic citrus scents that will slowly strip away your stone’s protective sealant.

Instead, stick to warm water, a dash of mild dish soap, and a soft cloth. For an extra shine and a boost of protection, use a dedicated, pH-neutral stone cleaning spray formulated specifically for your worktop type.
