Choosing a kitchen worktop

A kitchen worktop is a hard working piece: it’s not only the place where most food preparation is done, but it’s often the key visual element in a kitchen design. As the worktop is so important, it’s well worth choosing a high quality piece which will be both beautiful and practical – and one which will still look good in five, ten or even twenty years.

Stone worktops come in a wide range of natural colours, from classic marble white through to rich reds and yellows. Modern treatments and finishes give an even wider choice, from royal blue to lime green, so there’s a colour for every kitchen style.

Advantages of stone

Stone work surfaces are ideal for kitchens as they are both practical and beautiful. Each piece of stone is slightly different, formed by natural pressures sometimes over thousands of years. Carefully chosen and properly treated, the stone kitchen worktops offered by Surrey Marble and Granite are:

  • Durable
  • High-quality
  • Stain resistant
  • Scratch resistant
  • Heat resistant

Properly cared for, a marble or granite countertop can last decades, and still look as good as the day it was installed.

Granite, marble and more

Granite and marble are among the most popular kitchen worktop materials, and with good reason. They are a surprisingly flexible design choice, and can add an elegance and lustre to a vintage-inspired kitchen or a minimalist modern design.

However, there are many other stone worktop options. At Surrey Marble and Granite, we’ve selected a number of the best stones currently available and offer both natural and engineered stone worktops. Different stones have different advantages:

  • Granite
Natural strength and beauty combine to make a versatile, durable worktop.
  • Marble
Highly decorative and adds a sophisticated touch to any kitchen.
  • Silestone
Has anti-bacterial properties and is available in several bright colours
  • Limestone
    Hygienic, low maintenance and long-lasting
  • Quarella
Very easy to clean and also resists scratches, stains and burns marks.
  • Arena Stone
Very hard and available in a wide range of neutral and bright colours.
  • Cesarstone
Low maintenance, non-porous stone in over 20 natural shades.
  • Samsung Radianz Quartz
Incredibly durable stone with a subtle quartz glitter.
  • Okite
Specially engineered for kitchens, it is hygienic, safe and very strong.
  • Compac
A versatile stone with a wide range of colour options.

The first decision to make is whether to repair or replace the stone in question. In almost all cases, repair work will be significantly cheaper than replacing a stone floor or worktop. Some problems can be resolved at home while others require the assistance of an expert stone worker. Below we’ve listed some common problems and one solution.

Marble is one of the most beautiful natural stones. Its stunning veining patterns develop through the natural action of water and minerals over time. Each slab is unique, and each slice off a slab has its own distinct variations. This means that when you use marble as a design feature, you are truly creating something no one else can replicate.
