What to Expect Before, During & After Your Worktop Installation
A step-by-step guide from Surrey Marble & Granite
Upgrading your kitchen or bathroom worktops is exciting and we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible. This guide explains exactly what will happen at each stage, what you need to prepare, and what to expect from your initial call or visit through to installation, and aftercare.
Initial inquiry: what we require.
- Kitchen plans or rough dimensions for the pieces that you require.
- An idea of the material, brand, colour and thickness that you require, head over to the “our stones” section if you need some inspiration!
- Have you thought about the additions of things like upstands, backsplashes drainer grooves and hob cut outs that you may require within your quotation?
- You telephone number is always helpful, just in case we have any questions surrounding the detailing.

Before Templating: What you need to prepare.
- Clear access to the room.
- All units and end panels are fixed and in position.
- All under-mounted sinks are supported in final positions within the carcass.
- Hob on site, if this isn’t available, we can work to a specification book.
During Templating: What Happens
Our templating team will visit your home to create a highly accurate digital template of your new worktops. This typically takes 1–2 hours, depending on kitchen size.
The team will:
- Measure the cabinets.
- Record sink, hob, drainer groove and tap positions.
- Confirm joins, upstands, and splashback details.
- Finalise overhangs and finishing touches.
Fabrication and Lead times
Once the template is approved, fabrication normally takes 7–10 working days.
During this time we:
- Cut your chosen slab with CNC precision.
- Hand shape edges and profiles
- Create any cut-outs.
- Conduct meticulous quality checks at every stage.

Installation day
Installation usually takes 2–5 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the job. We ask that access routes are clear, the kitchen is tidy and ready, and any pets/children are safely out of the work area.
What our fitting team will do:
- bring in your new stone worktops.
- fit all pieces and ensure perfect alignment.
- apply silicone and resin for clean, seamless joins.
- level and secure the worktops.
- clean down the surfaces and leave your space tidy.
We keep disruption to a minimum, but please expect:
- Ocassional noise from tools
- Some areas of wet silicone around upstands and sink seals. This usually cures within 24 hours.
After Installation: Recommendations
Your beautiful new worktops will be ready to use, just be careful not to wet or touch the areas of silicone mentioned above.
Natural materials are sealed by our installers and may need a wipe and buff to remove any cloudy residue left by this process.
Stone worktops last decades when properly looked after. We’ll give you guidance based on the material you chose, such as:
- how to clean daily
- what to avoid (harsh chemicals, heavy impacts, thermal shock)
- sealing requirements for natural stone
If we have installed a quartz worktop, you will find full care and maintenance tips on the brands own website. You will also need to register your worktop warranty directly with the brand.
Ongoing support
We’re always here if you have questions or need advice, whether it’s about cleaning, stain removal, repairs, or adding more pieces later.
