Since the invention of Formica in the 1920’s, kitchen worktops in the UK and USA had been covered in laminate surfaces. However the past 15 years have seen the emergence of natural stone surfaces to be much more popular and not too expensive by comparison.

New surfaces such as granite, marble, soap stone and even concrete have been installed in kitchens throughout the land. Now there’s a new countertop rival on the design scene-engineered quartz.

Quartz comprises the best qualities of laminate and stone, plus its own special features, and began appearing in home in the UK and Europe some 15 years ago. Today quartz countertops are exploding in popularity with UK sales increasing by 50% in 2008.

Although some quartz countertops are actually manufactured from quarried slabs of the natural stone, the newly engineered material is created through a process that mixes approximately 95% ground natural quartz with an additonal 5% of polymer resins.

This results in a super hard, low maintenance, natural stone countertop, available in a wide range of dazzling colours. Most purchasers of engineered quartz are seduced by this virtually unlimited colour options available.
